Matching a Speed Controller to a Motor

Matching a Speed Controller to a Motor

Overview: There are a few characteristics of speed controllers and motors which need to be understood in order to match them up so they are compatible with each other.

Voltage: The speed controller's Voltage rating should be the same as the motor's Voltage rating. For example a 24 Volt speed controller should be used with a 24 Volt Motor.

Watts: If possible the speed controller's Watts rating should be the same as the motor's Watts rating. Sometimes a speed controller is not available with the same Watts rating as the motor and when this happens then a speed controller that is rated for more Watts than the motor and is as close as possible to the motor's Watts rating should be used.

Summary:

  • The controller and motor should both have the same Volts rating.

  • The controller and motor should both have the same Watts rating if possible, if not possible then a controller with a Watts rating that is over and closest to the motor's Watts rating should be used.
